lost emails in Inbox after compacting
#11
I created that key, (just double checked) but it still did an 'auto' compact when exiting.

Have you created in both 32 and 64 bit reg keys?

the REG KEY is:
"HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Identities\{GUID}\Software\Microsoft\Outlook Express\5.0"

Since this is a 32 bit version of W7, there is no WOW6432Node....  The registry key was set as noted for W7x32.  I normally compact every weekend when I can ensure the system is idle, but it still occasionally decides to compact anyway when I exit the program or an Identity.

on 32bit is "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE" without SYSWOW32 or anything else before

The key was created as noted above:

the 32 bit key is:

"HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Outlook Express\5.0"

if you dont see the "Compact Check Count" on the list, right click and then click "New>32bit DWORD"

Enter "Compact Check Count" as name and set it 0.

Still getting random compacts.

My mistake.
that reg key should be on: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Identities\{GUID}\Software\Microsoft\Outlook Express\5.0

1. Close Outlook Express and all message windows.
2. Click Start> Run and type without quotes "regedit".
3. Navigate to this key ;-
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Identities\{GUID}\Software\Microsoft\Outlook Express\5.0
where GUID is the long number used for your Identity.
4. In the right-hand pane, double-click "Compact Check Count", then change the value to zero. I chose the "decimal" value option when resetting the value in the "compact check count" dialog box, it is a normal digital value.
5. Close Registry Editor.
All done.
Having set the Compact Check Count to zero, the pop-up panel will not occur again until it reaches 100, then you simply repeat the procedure and reset it to zero.

Thanks. That appears to work, but...

I normally compact all identities every weekend before doing my weekly backups. That appears to reset the count to 1. The problem is that the original OE had an option we could set to control the percent of fragmentation when compacting was necessary. As it works now, my most frequently used identity already had a count of 68 by Wednesday. Others were smaller numbers with the second most used identity already at 53. It's really not an acceptable solution for many users to have to use regedit to manually reset the counts at least once during the week. Auto-compacting is a good feature, but the 'trigger' needs to be a lot higher than 100. And even then, it should pop up a warning to manually compact rather than just starting a compact with many other things running.

I understand that. But thats how OE works. Maby on a future version that is fixed.
For now, you can simply create a reg file that you can double click every some days to reset the counter.

Is there any way to combine previous and current back ups so that all mail can be combined?  For example, since some files have disappeared in X-Name on computer 2, but I still have them on X-Name on computer 1, can I merge the two X-name files to get all of the files?  I realized there may be some duplicates.........

Thank you.
