If you got any error try reinstalling. After you have to make outlook expresss Default application, to do that go to control panel and open 'Default programs>Set Default Programs'.
Find outlook express and click 'Set this program as default'

After making outlook express default program, you can send emails through word or excel on windows 7.

I am running ver2 and have all defaults set in the control panel (mailto, MAPI, .eml). Opera and IE work OK, but Firefox just opens the Outlook Express program and not the new message window.

What windows version do you have? If you have windows 8 then mapi does not support sending from external programs yet. Windows 7 has full mapi support only.
